What is Birth Mother Support?
Birth Mother Support can mean a lot of different things. Most often, when people talk about birth mother support, they’re referring to support groups or counseling services geared towards helping birth mothers navigate the post-placement phase of their adoption journey. However, they may also be referring to financial support provided to the birth mother during pregnancy and up to six weeks after birth. Let’s dive into both of these categories of birth mother support.
Three Types of Birth Mother Support
Counseling + Support
Women who make an adoption plan with The Law Offices of Berkowitz & White PLLC are assisted in obtaining free counseling/support by a third-party Licensed Clinical Social Worker and/or birth mother counselor. In addition to this, we connect expectant mothers, as well as birth mothers who have already placed, with a Life Skill and Career Mentor. This one-on-one mentor is available 24/7, 365 days a year to help the birth mother in any way possible. The Life Skill and Career Mentor will also help the birth mother obtain housing, build a resume, find a job or enroll in school. If needed, they’ll help them develop valuable life skills like goal setting, time management and budgeting too.
Financial Assistance
Florida state law allows adoptive parents to assist the expectant mother during her pregnancy and up to six weeks after pregnancy. These expenses are allowed if you are unemployed, under-employed or unemployable. These living expenses can include: telephone service, food, toiletries, necessary clothing, transportation, insurance and expenses necessary for the health and wellbeing of you and your child. Housing assistance, along with rent and utility payments, may also be available to birth parents.
Medical Care
If you have decided to place your baby for adoption in Florida through our law firm, we can help you apply for public assistance programs, medical insurance benefits, hospital support, etc. We will also help you obtain the prenatal care you need to ensure a healthy pregnancy. After you’ve given birth, our staff will assist you in transitioning from Pregnancy Medicaid to regular Medicaid after your pregnancy to ensure you have continuous medical coverage for your own health and well being.
