Relative Adoption

Relative adoption is a significant moment in which a child is adopted by a biological relative, such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or cousin. This commonly occurs when biological parents cannot care for the child due to circumstances like death or incapacitation. In Florida, the relative adoption process is often less formal than non-relative adoptions, with a home study typically not required based on the relationship. Only one petition and hearing are needed, streamlining the process for families. Relative adoptions provide essential stability and continuity, helping maintain the child’s identity and connection to their roots.

Upon finalization, the child receives a new birth certificate listing their relatives as parents, granting them the same rights as biological children. At Florida Adoptions, we believe relative adoption strengthens family bonds and offers a secure environment for children. This process can often be quick and efficient, allowing families to unite and thrive together.

Relative Adoption:
You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

What is relative adoption and when does it typically occur?

Relative adoption is the legal process in which a child is adopted by a biological relative, such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or cousin. This often happens when biological parents are unable to care for the child due to situations like death or incapacitation, allowing family members to step in and provide care.

How does the relative adoption process differ from non-relative adoptions in Florida?

In Florida, the relative adoption process is generally less formal than non-relative adoptions, often requiring only one petition and hearing. A home study is typically not necessary due to the established family relationship, making the process quicker and more streamlined for families.

What are the benefits of relative adoption for children and families?

Relative adoption offers essential stability and continuity for children, helping them maintain their identity and connection to their roots. Upon finalization, the child receives a new birth certificate that lists their relatives as parents, granting them the same rights as biological children. This process strengthens family bonds and creates a secure environment for children to thrive.
